Shiva
Baidyanath (Vaidyanatha, Vaijyanath) is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in Deoghar, Jharkhand. The temple complex contains 22 separate temples within its fortified grounds — making it one of the most elaborate Jyotirlinga complexes. Baidyanath means 'Lord of physicians', with Shiva revered as the supreme healer. The Shravan Mela held during the Hindu month of Shravan (July–August) is one of India's largest religious gatherings: millions of kanwariyas (water pilgrims) walk the 105 km route from Sultanganj, carrying sacred Ganga water in decorated pots (kanwars) to offer to the Jyotirlinga.
Deoghar's history is connected to the Ramayana: one tradition holds that Ravana worshipped Shiva here to gain power. Historical inscriptions from the Pala and Gupta periods (4th–9th century CE) attest to the site's antiquity. The Deoghar Airport (operational 2022) now makes this Jyotirlinga much more accessible.
