About Vaishali (Ashoka Pillar & Buddhist Stupas)

Vaishali in northern Bihar is one of the most important sites in the Buddhist Circuit — the ancient capital of the Licchavi republic, often described as the world's first republic. Buddha visited Vaishali several times and delivered his last sermon here, announcing his impending mahaparinirvana three months in advance. Emperor Ashoka erected one of his best-preserved lion-topped pillars at Kolhua, which still stands intact today. Vaishali also hosted the Second Buddhist Council.

The Licchavi republic (6th century BCE) was one of the earliest known democracies. Ashoka's pillar at Kolhua (~250 BCE) has a single lion capital. Excavations in 1958 revealed a Relic Stupa believed to hold a portion of Buddha's ashes.
