The history of Guruvayur Temple is steeped in legends and myths. It is believed that the idol of Guruvayurappan was originally worshipped by Lord Vishnu himself and later given to Brahma. Brahma then presented it to Sutapa and his wife Prsni, who were reborn as Kashyapa and Aditi. They worshipped the idol and Lord Vishnu appeared before them and granted them a boon that he would be born as their son. Lord Krishna thus manifested as their son. Before Krishna departed from earth, he instructed Udhava to install the idol in a suitable place. Guru (Jupiter) and Vayu (Wind God) were entrusted with this task, and they installed the idol at the present site of Guruvayur, hence the name. The temple has undergone several renovations and expansions over the centuries, with significant contributions from various rulers and devotees.
