The history of Our Lady of Dolours Basilica dates back to the late 19th century when the foundation stone for the original church was laid in 1875. Over time, the need for a larger and more impressive structure arose, leading to the construction of the present basilica. The new church was designed in the Indo-Gothic style, blending European architectural elements with local influences. Construction began in 1929 and was completed in 1940. The basilica was consecrated in 1941 and has since become a prominent religious and cultural landmark in Thrissur.
