Arikamedu's history dates back to the 2nd century BCE, with its prominence as a trading center peaking between the 1st century BCE and the 2nd century CE. The site served as a vital link in the Indo-Roman trade route, facilitating the exchange of goods such as textiles, spices, and precious stones from India for Roman wine, pottery, and glassware. Arikamedu's strategic location on the Coromandel Coast made it an ideal port for maritime trade, attracting merchants from across the globe. The archaeological discoveries at Arikamedu have provided valuable insights into the ancient trade networks and cultural interactions between India and the Roman world, shedding light on a significant chapter in global history.
We went to this place through boat ride and it's a very beautiful place to visit. Before visiting this place You will be going through Mangrove forest and adventure water ride. If You are visiting pondicherry don't miss this place. Best time to visit is morning before 10 and afternoon after 3pm
You can see few standing walls here. Walls backside are built with new bricks and front side walls are built with old age bricks. Differences can be clearly seen between old and new bricks. Nearby small canal but no water in it. Seems this place is not properly maintained by government for tourism purpose.
Good historical site. Need better maintenance. People may disappoint if they don't like to visit ancient places because all this kind of places are not in good condition.
