The temple conducts six daily rituals at various times from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and observes twelve annual festivals. The current temple structure was constructed in the 16th century by a local chieftain, Tuluva King. Subsequent renovations and expansions were undertaken by several rulers, including the Vijayanagara Empire, the Keladi Nayakas, and the Wadiyar dynasty. The Murudeshwar Temple is revered as one of the five sacred sites, or kshetras, dedicated to Lord Shiva in Karnataka, alongside Dharmasthala, Nanjangud, Gokarna, and Dhareshwara. These temples are believed to house fragments of the Atma-Linga that Ravana shattered, making them highly revered by Shiva devotees. I visited this temple during a weekday, and it was not very crowded. The temple is within walking distance from the Thiruvanmiyur Bus Stand and is accessible from both the ECR road side and the parallel road. It is an ancient temple with remarkable architectural work, situated on a large plot of land that includes a small water body. Primarily a Lord Shiva temple, it houses numerous Sivalingam in its sanctum. Overall, I was impressed by the place and its environment. This temple is a must-visit for anyone interested in Chennai's history and culture. It is a calm, peaceful, and spacious place with beautiful architecture and paintings.
