Krishna (Banke Bihari)
Vrindavan, the town where Krishna grew up and sported with the gopis, is one of Hinduism's most sacred places. Banke Bihari Temple is Vrindavan's most visited and beloved shrine — dedicated to Krishna in his tribhanga pose (three-bend posture), utterly charming and playful. A unique tradition: the curtain before the idol is repeatedly opened and closed every few minutes to prevent devotees from being 'enchanted' by the divine gaze. Other major temples include ISKCON Vrindavan, Radha Raman, Radha Damodara, and Nidhi Van. Vrindavan's narrow lanes, thousands of monkeys, and the Yamuna River promenade create an otherworldly atmosphere.
Banke Bihari Temple was established in 1864 by Swami Haridas's disciple Goswami Vitthal Das. The idol was originally worshipped in Nidhivan. The Vrindavan-Mathura area is associated with the 15th–16th century Bhakti movement saints: Vallabhacharya, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and Surdas.
