Barsana, about 42 km from Mathura, is the birthplace and childhood home of Radha, Krishna's beloved and the highest of the gopis. The main Shriji Temple (Radha Rani Temple or Barsana Ladli Ji Mandir) sits atop Bhanugarh hill, reached by climbing 200+ steps. The temple is unique in that Radha is worshipped as the primary deity — an exception in most Krishna temples. Barsana is world-famous for its Lathmar Holi, celebrated a week before the main Holi, in which the women of Barsana playfully beat the men of Nandgaon (Krishna's village) with sticks. Other sites include Rangeeli Mahal, Man Mandir, and Peeli Pokhar.
The current Shriji temple was built in the 16th century by Raja Veer Singh of Orchha. Barsana's Lathmar Holi is a tradition several centuries old and draws massive crowds each Phalgun. The name 'Barsana' derives from 'Brahma-sarovar', the pond created by Brahma to please Radha.
