McLeodganj, the upper part of Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, has been the home of the 14th Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration since 1960. The Tsuglagkhang Complex — the Dalai Lama's official residence and temple — is the spiritual and administrative heart of Tibetan Buddhism in exile. The complex includes the main Tsuglagkhang temple (facing towards Lhasa), the Namgyal Monastery, the Tibet Museum, and the Kalachakra temple. When the Dalai Lama gives public teachings, pilgrims from around the world fill the complex. McLeodganj is also a major centre for Buddhist philosophy, meditation retreats, and Tibetan medicine (Men-Tsee-Khang).
After the 1959 Tibetan Uprising, Prime Minister Nehru granted McLeodganj as the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile. The Namgyal Monastery, founded by the 3rd Dalai Lama in 16th-century Tibet, was re-established here after 1959.
