Jagannath (Vishnu)
The Jagannath Temple at Puri is one of the four sacred Char Dhams of Hinduism and one of the most visited temples in India. Lord Jagannath (a form of Vishnu/Krishna), his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra are worshipped here in uniquely abstract wooden idols that are ritually replaced every 12–19 years (Nabakalebara ceremony). The temple's Rath Yatra festival — where three gigantic chariots are pulled through the streets by hundreds of thousands of devotees — is one of the world's largest religious gatherings, inspiring the English word 'juggernaut'. Non-Hindus are not permitted inside.
The present temple was built by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty in the 12th century. The site's sanctity is ancient; the Rigveda mentions Purushottama Kshetra. Shankaracharya established one of his four mathas (Govardhan Math) here in the 8th century.
