Shiva (Kalpeshwar)
Kalpeshwar (2,200 m) is the fifth and final Panch Kedar, where the Jata (matted hair) of Lord Shiva is worshipped in a natural cave. Uniquely among the five, Kalpeshwar remains open throughout the year — even in winter when the other four Kedars are snowbound. The temple is accessed by a short 2 km trek through the charming Urgam valley near Helang on the Badrinath highway. The Urgam valley is known for its ancient walnut trees and apples. The natural cave setting gives a very intimate and authentic feeling compared to more developed shrines.
The fifth of the Panch Kedar shrines attributed to the Pandavas. 'Kalpeshwar' means 'Wish-fulfilling Lord' (kalpataru + ishvara). The cave is carved by the Kalpa Ganga stream. This is the least visited of the five Kedar shrines, making it a peaceful destination for serious pilgrims.
