Shiva (Madhyamaheshwar)
Madhyamaheshwar (3,497 m) is the second of the Panch Kedar, where the navel (madhya/navel) of Lord Shiva is worshipped. The temple sits in a breathtaking high-altitude meadow surrounded by snow peaks and alpines, accessible via a 24 km trek from Ukhimath or Ransi. The high-altitude meadows above the temple (up to 4,000 m) bloom with Brahmakamal (Saussurea obvallata) — the sacred lotus of the Himalayas. Sheep and shepherd communities graze their flocks here in summer. The view of the Kedar Dome and Chaukhamba massif is spectacular.
Like all Panch Kedar shrines, this temple is attributed to the Pandavas and was sanctified by Adi Shankaracharya. The cedar-wood doors and stone architecture date to the medieval period. The temple opens for 6 months and closes for winter.
