Krishna
Mathura, one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri), is the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The Krishna Janmabhoomi complex marks the exact spot where Krishna was born in a prison cell to Devaki and Vasudeva. The main temple is next to the Keshav Deva Temple and opposite the Shahi Idgah mosque. Mathura is the heart of the Braj region — a 84-kos pilgrimage circuit encompassing every place associated with Krishna's life. The city celebrates Janmashtami (Krishna's birthday) with unparalleled fervour, with Mathura and neighbouring Vrindavan seeing over a million visitors in a single night.
Archaeological evidence places Mathura as a major urban centre from the 3rd century BCE. The original temple was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. The current Keshav Deva Temple was built after independence. The Mathura region's sculpture — 'Mathura art' — influenced the entire subcontinent.
