Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhism
Tawang Monastery is the largest monastery in India and one of the largest in the Buddhist world, home to hundreds of monks of the Gelugpa school. Founded in the 17th century, it houses an 8 m gilded Buddha statue, ancient thangkas and manuscripts. Perched dramatically in the eastern Himalayas, it is also the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama.
Founded in 1680–81 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso in accordance with the wishes of the fifth Dalai Lama.
