Shiva (Tungnath)
Tungnath Temple at 3,680 m is the world's highest Shiva temple and the third (and most visited) of the Panch Kedar. According to the Mahabharata, the five Pandava brothers searched for Shiva here after Kurukshetra; different parts of Shiva's body are worshipped at each of the five Kedar shrines. At Tungnath, Shiva's arms (bhuja) are believed to be present. The 3.5 km trek from Chopta (3,000 m) through rhododendron forests and alpine meadows is one of the most beautiful short treks in the Himalayas. The nearby Chandrashila summit (3,800 m) offers panoramic views of peaks including Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba and Trishul.
The temple is attributed to the Pandavas, with the current stone structure renovated by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Chopta below the temple is often called the 'Mini Switzerland of India' for its pastoral beauty. The region is part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.
