    History

Built in the 12th century by the Kadamba dynasty, Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple is the oldest surviving temple in Goa. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and showcases a blend of Kadamba and Yadava architectural styles. Remarkably, it survived the Portuguese conquest and subsequent destruction of many Hindu temples in Goa due to its remote location within the dense jungle. The black basalt stone used in its construction contributes to its name, "Tambdi Surla," meaning "red rock" in the local language, possibly referring to the reddish hue the stones acquire when wet. The temple continues to be an active place of worship, attracting devotees and history enthusiasts alike.
