    History

Construction of the Basilica of Bom Jesus began in 1594 and was completed in 1605. It is one of the oldest churches in Goa and is dedicated to Infant Jesus. The basilica is notable for housing the incorrupt body of St. Francis Xavier, a revered Jesuit missionary who played a key role in spreading Christianity in Asia. His body, brought to Goa in 1554, lies in a silver casket within the basilica and is periodically displayed for public veneration. The Basilica's historical significance, combined with its stunning architecture, makes it a prominent landmark in Goa's rich cultural heritage. It stands as a testament to the region's colonial past and its enduring religious fervor.

This basilica of Bom Jesus, one of the seven wonders of Portuguese origin in the world, holds significant historical and religious importance. Its construction began in 1594 and was completed in 1605, making it approximately 419 years old. Within the basilica lies a remarkable mummy, believed to be around 540 years old. Preserved without the use of chemicals, it is attributed to Saint Francis Xavier. The area surrounding the basilica is quite extensive and is considered a must-visit destination in South Goa.

Reportedly, started work in 1594 and finished by 1605. In the history of Indian Christanity, this is an important place, as the holy body of St.Francis Xavier is kept here, he was one of the founders of the Jesuit movement. We visited around noon, lots of crowds. We were here 10 years ago and more places were accessible inside. It's free entry and the main attraction is the mortal remains of St.Francis Xavier, kept on a glass box. It's up there and not much can be seen. Other than that, it's a large Church and lots of space to walk around. No photography inside, but you have great photo options around, large space, good photo ops all around. For the religious, it's a pilgrimage place, it's a sacred place and the pews are open only when service is on. It's a world heritage site and one of the biggest attractions in Goa after the beaches.

This historic church is admired for its impressive architecture, construction, and interior. It is a combination of multiple churches and offers a museum with historical artifacts. A unique feature is the preserved body of St. Francis Xavier, a follower of Jesus Christ. Visitors can see his body up close, along with his clothing and other personal items. The church is a peaceful place for prayer and reflection, surrounded by shops selling holistic items. There are clean restrooms and ample parking.
