Construction of Se Cathedral began in 1570 to commemorate the Portuguese victory over the Bijapur Sultanate. It took nearly 80 years to complete, finally being consecrated in 1640. The cathedral was built on the site of a former mosque, symbolizing the Portuguese assertion of their power and faith. Over centuries, Se Cathedral has witnessed numerous historical events, including the rise and fall of Portuguese rule in Goa. It has served as a significant religious center for the Catholic community and continues to be an important pilgrimage site. The cathedral's architecture reflects the blending of Portuguese and local styles. Its scale and grandeur showcase the ambition and wealth of the Portuguese empire during that era. Today, Se Cathedral stands as a testament to Goa's complex and fascinating history.
Se Cathedral in Goa is a breathtaking marvel of Portuguese architecture. The grandeur of the cathedral is evident as soon as you step inside, with its soaring ceilings and intricately carved altars. The serene atmosphere makes it a perfect place for reflection and prayer. The historical significance of the cathedral, coupled with its beautiful surroundings, adds to the overall experience. The well-maintained grounds and the helpful staff enhance the visit. A must-see for anyone visiting Goa! Also, it's free of cost. No fee is charged. But be mindful of the time. It closes much earlier than our expectations. Besides, all these wonderful things are happening - the building looks dark and gloomy. We don't feel any spiritual experience as like in other Catholic Cathedral.
Happy to be at one of the ancient cathedrals in Goa. The renovation works were going on at the time we visited. Happy to be part of the church service as well. It was a wonderful experiance that the century old constructions amazed of the great architecture built without any modern technologies. The church is a mighty symbol of the colony rule by Portuguese.
The Se Cathedral Church and Archaeological Museum are located side by side in Old Goa. While some maintenance work was underway during my visit, I was still captivated by the church's impressive historical architecture and holistic nature. The surrounding gardens were well-maintained, and I admired the intricate details of both the building's exterior and interior. It's a peaceful and serene place, ideal for prayer and reflection.
